Lili Elbe, born as Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener on 28th December 1882, was a Danish painter and one of the earliest individuals to undergo gender reassignment surgery. She was a prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community due to her courageous transition. Hailing from Vejle, Denmark, Elbe was a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where she met her future wife, Gerda Gottlieb. At the age of 22, she married Gottlieb, who was 19. The couple relocated to Paris in 1912, providing Elbe with the freedom to express her true identity as a woman and Gottlieb with the opportunity to advance her painting career. Elbe’s gender transition commenced in the late 1920s when she started to dress in women’s attire and self-identify as a woman.
