Born as Sextus Varius Avitus Bassianus around 204, he hailed from a distinguished Arab family in Emesa, now known as Homs, Syria. From a young age, he served as the head priest of the sun god Elagabal. After the death of his cousin, Emperor Caracalla, Elagabalus was elevated to the principate at just 14 years old, following an army revolt instigated by his grandmother Julia Maesa against Caracalla’s successor, Macrinus.
